Epilepsy

I have been wondering how would it feel when when someone is going under an epileptic seizure. Epilepsy is a complex neurological disorder, which lead to uncontrolled or abnormal neuronal activity. This is not a one disease condition. It is more a group of condition which give rise to the same effect. The diagnosis of epilepsy is done mainly by observation. But the gold standard of diagnosis of epilepsy is a prolonged observation of EEG. But since this is very costly and not applicable in many incidents, it is not used in most cases. But there can be mis diagnosis of non-epileptic seizures as epileptic seizures.

We can use PET, EEG, MRI, SPECT, magnetoenchephalogrphy and medical history to come to a exact diagnosis. The classification of epilepsy can be based on factors like the localization of brain damage, the triggering factor, observations done at the seizure, the first cause and specific symptoms.

In most cases there no cure but the control procedures. In some rare cases surgical interventions can cure the disease. Epileptic patients are given frequent care to minimize the possibility of repeated seizures.

Death?

Do you know what are the criteria to declare a person as dead? Well there's some different aspects to death.

As you normally know, if a person to be called dead, his / her circulation (heart beat) should stop as well as the Respiration. When these conditions appear obvious, person can be declared dead. But what happens when the person's respiration and circulation is intact, but the person's brain is dead.

If certain other organs are mal-functioning, there are surgical procedures to transplant new organs for the affected organ. But unfortunately there is no way of transplanting the brain according to the prevailing scientific findings. Brain death can be of few types.

Brain stem death - brain stem is affected. In this condition, if the respiratory and the vasomotor centers located in the brain stem is affected then the person will invariably be dead. But there can be incidents where the respiratory center is affected, but the person's respiration is maintained by a machine (ventilator). In such incidents, for the medical persons to remove the ventilator, the brain death should be certified. There is a test to confirm that the person no longer can breath by him / her self.

If the cerebral areas are damaged, the person can breath by him / her self. But the person is said to be in a coma. This type of coma is not recoverable. Person is said to be in a fully vegetable state. Person will never recover, because the higher centers can no longer function. But since the respiratory can cardiovascular centers are alright, the person can maintain other body functions.

There are strong ethical issues related to this kind of procedure. So there are lows in place to place to prevent certain mal-practices. For example is the person, that is to be declared dead has signed an agreement of organ donation, then the doctors those of who will be involved in organ extraction process can not be involved in the process of declaring the person as dead. By that way there is a prevention of possible biased decision making.

Apart from the all important physical death, there's a legal death also. A person is legaly dead at the time the doctor has declared the person dead.

Science Education

Science Education is an essential part of modern life style. You can no longer live with out some from of science knowledge.

Butterflies are a wonderful creatures with lot of variations. You can watch them for all day, but i bet you would not get exhausted. This is quite true with youth. They have lot of variations, lot of talent. Once that talent is harnessed in the right way, you get a wonderful tool that will take the human kind to the next level of development.

Most of the scientific findings and great discoveries were done by the most of the inventors and scientist at a very young age. So to take humans to the next level development, we need our youth to have a good understanding of science.

This blog will be dedicated to provide valuable information on various scientific topics related to youth. I will also try to make sure that there will be a variety of articles in this blog, so that it will be as beautiful as a cloud of butterflies.
